Just a friendly reminder that Anno and Co. originally intended for Rei Ayanami to creep the hell out of us.
Rei was, for all intents and purposes, a personified backlash against the hordes of 80s and early 90s fanboys who slobbered over female characters, and who figured that having a 2D girl that obeyed your every whim and had no voice as your own personal fuckdoll would be pretty damned sweet.
In other words, they wanted a placid, soulless little girl to wank over.
And Anno delivered. Oh, boy, did he deliver.
Regular old Rei still creeps me out a little, because I think about this massive, ancient creature inside her. It isn’t human, and it is human. it’s far less than what we are but also so much greater. It is pretty much alien in every way, yet is intimately close to humanity. And Rei Ayanami has that within her, even if it is just a small shard, even if it is locked away in her soul as tightly as she can make it. It’s still in there. And I look at that placid, emotionless facade she puts on like a mask every day and I shudder. Because I know what Lovecraftian horror lies deep within her soul and it yearns to be free…..
I need a freaking drink.
Amen to that! It also adds to the whole genre-deconstruction thing in ways other than I previously mentioned.
You know how with a lot of the Pale Emotionless Girl trope, you see the girl in question get teased by her peers, who call her things like “alien”? (In Japan, “alien” is a common taunt on par with “spaz” or “freak”.)
And we, the audience, are supposed to look at the poor girl being tormented and go, “Aww, poor little helpless thing, being bullied! How dare those cruel bastards call you an alien! I bet inside you’re all warm and squishy, just like us! You only need someone - perhaps someone like me - to sweep you off your cute little feet.”
Enter Rei Ayanami, who is pale and emotionless and ostracized by her peers. She’s called an alien and a freak at school, and for a while, both Shinji and the audience are under the impression that she’s just another bullied kid, and thus worthy of sympathy and befriending.
We find out later that other human beings push her away because, like dogs smelling fear, they can sense there is something deeply wrong with the girl.
She doesn’t smile. She doesn’t eat. She doesn’t talk. She just stares at you with empty red eyes, and somewhere deep inside you, you get the awful sensation that if you keep looking into them, you’ll see something you were never meant to.
I love Rei as a character, but I would never go near her if she were real.
